Abridged overview: Cain's backstory, as told by him, is remarkably inconsistent. Sometimes he will claim he was always an adventurer, right from the day he took his first step; it's a poetic tale of humble beginnings and destined ends. At other times, he'll describe how he found his calling during a routine business trip to Ul'dah to sell minerals and ore. The details of his origin story--people, places, even dates--vary across the board depending on whom he's speaking to. Nevertheless, a handful of eyewitnesses can account for Cain arriving in Ul'dah, as many would-be adventurers did, a few years after the Battle of Carteneau. He inquired at the Gladiators' Guild with a significant interest in self-defense over fighting in the arena. He was never too comfortable with being a "tank," but it did feed into his ego and the need to feel important. Awakening the Echo and becoming the Warrior of Light was the shock of a lifetime for him, and not a particularly good one.
